The devaluation of the yuan tests China’s rise as a world power

After the devaluation of the yuan, the international financial markets started trembling. Washington accused Peking of taking advantage of the market. As China wants to incorporate the yuan into the Special Drawing Rights, it is inconvenient to prolong the devaluation. Furthermore, if a currency war broke out, China would risk increasing the economic and geopolitical tensions between countries in the Asian-Pacific region. That way, the United States would have more possibilities to disrupt regional co-operation initiatives and thereby undermine China’s rise as a world power.

Argentina re-nationalized railways

The Senate approved with 53 votes in favor and two against the government initiative of Cristina Fernández, which has already been backed by the Chamber of Deputies.
With the enactment of the law on Wednesday, the Argentine State recovered control of the freight and passenger rail system, privatized in the 1990s.
In fact the State has regained control over most of the country’s railway lines because of failure of the companies that controlled them to provide the services.

Britain is to “beef up” the defence of the Falkland Islands the government has confirmed, amid reports of an increased risk of invasion by Argentina.
The defence secretary, Michael Fallon, is expected to announce reinforcements of troops and equipment in parliament later on Tuesday after a defence ministry review suggested an attack on the south Atlantic archipelago was more likely.

Russia will help Syria in case of attack: Putin

St. Petersburg, Russia (SEP/06/2013) - the President of Russia, Vladímir Putin, said today that his country will help Syria in the event of a foreign military attack.

"Are we going to help Syria? Yes, Putin said in response to a question about what will do Moscow in case of foreign military intervention in Syria, in the final of the G-20 Summit in St. Petersburg press conference.

Putin added: "we are already helping. We supply weapons and cooperate in the economic field."
